I was disheartened to read this article in the NY Times detailing the USDA’s (United States Department of Agriculture) withdrawal of their endorsement of Meatless Mondays. Disheartened, but not at all surprised. According to the article, the USDA had promoted Meatless Mondays in their recent newsletter on the basis of the health, as well as the environmental, benefits. After a massive outcry from livestock producers, and at least one Congress member, the USDA retracted their endorsement. A USDA spokesperson said, “U.S.D.A. does not endorse Meatless Monday”.
Now, I know that I’m not the norm. I can go days, even weeks, without eating meat. For some people, even one meal without meat would be a struggle. However, reducing meat consumption can be one of the best things that you can do for your health. I get that livestock producers need to earn a living but I think it’s wrong for a major organization like the USDA to fold under their pressure. Just like many of us have been saying regarding the Food Guide in Canada, industry should not be dictating what we eat.
