I came across this article about a recall on apple slices the other day. Apparently they may have been contaminated with listeria which can be serious for people with weakened immune systems, the very young and the very old, and pregnant women. I just keep wondering how we’ve become so lazy. I understand that a sliced apple can be easier for children and people with dental issues to eat, makes the addition of peanut butter easier, and is just a little bit more fun than biting into a whole apple. But really, are we so lazy that we can no longer slice-up an apple on our own? Our food skills cannot be so far eroded that we have forgotten how to cut up an apple; can they? How long does it take to cut an apple into slices? A minute or two. Not to mention the added waste of placing all these apple slices in little plastic baggies. I know that we live in an age where everyone is pressed for time but there’s got to be a line somewhere. When processed food is making us sick, both chronically through long-term consumption, and through acute illness such as listeria contamination it’s time to take a hard look at our priorities.
